Aristocrat and Estate Creator

A country house and a garden folly decorate porcelain dinnerware found in the attic at Montgomery Place and on shards recovered in the garden.

These pieces were once part of a larger dinner service made in China expressly for western consumers. The subject matter appealed to those, like Janet Montgomery, who aspired to create model country estates.

Tureen lid (detail). Porcelain, c. 1800. Bard College, Montgomery Place Collection.
