The Sawkill Creek

Preserving & Enhancing Nature’s Beauty

As early as the 1820s, the Sawkill ravine had attracted attention internationally for its beauty.

Not only had the French artist Milbert celebrated it in this print, but the Revolutionary War hero Marquis de Lafayette had beheld it on his highly publicized return trip to America in 1824–25. When paying a visit to his long-time friend Janet Montgomery, Lafayette viewed the cataract during his walking tour of her estate, thus assuring it certain fame.
