One of the leading experts in American home and garden design lived across the Hudson River from Montgomery Place in his model estate, Highland Gardens, located in Newburgh, New York.

The multi-talented Andrew Jackson Downing (1815–1852) was a nurseryman, landscape designer, writer, and social commentator who hosted a nationwide discussion of American design through his magazine The Horticulturist. He and his wife, Caroline DeWindt Downing, were also friends of Cora Barton’s.
