Documenting Interiors

Several sources help us know how the interiors of the Montgomery Place mansion appeared in the 19th century. These include receipts, letters, sketches, early photographs and a 1921 room-by-room listing.

Artist James Abbott used these historical resources to recreate the mansion’s early interior decoration through watercolor renderings shown here. Most of the furnishings depicted here survive in the mansion today although their placement may be different.
