The Sawkill Creek - Introduction

The Sawkill Creek

Located on the east side of the Hudson River, 100 miles north of New York City, the Sawkill Creek forms the northern border of Montgomery Place, a historic estate owned by Historic Hudson Valley.

In this program we will learn why, during different eras, people valued the creek for varying reasons. The story of the Sawkill and surrounding ravine (see Site Map) provides a case study for understanding the environmental history of the United States. It reflects how American attitudes toward land and nature have changed over the centuries.
