Neoclassical House on a Hill

With the desire to construct an elegant house with commanding mountain and river views, Janet Montgomery purchased land from John Benthuysen in 1802.

Not only could she see for miles from this vantage point, but she could also “be seen” on this promontory above the Hudson River (see Site Map). By the end of the 18th century, the waterway had become an important corridor for tourists and others traveling into the American hinterland. Guidebooks published especially for travelers pointed out homes of famous Americans and other points of interest along the route.

Map of a farm in the town of Red Hook, the property of Mrs. Janet Montgomery, by John Cox, Junior. Ink on paper, October 1802. Bard College, Montgomery Place Collection.
